(Vittoria, Norfolk County) Yesterday (Tuesday January 31, 2012) at approximately 12:30 pm Norfolk County Fire & Rescue Services responded to a reported structure fire at 1075 Hillcrest Rd (near the intersection of Vittoria Rd. and Hillcrest Rd.).

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from a one storey single family residence. The heat was intense and firefighters mounted a defensive attack (they did not enter the home) until shortly after when they entered to completely extinguish the flames. It took thirty minutes to control the fire although firefighters were on scene several hours.

Two small dogs were rescued by firefighters and are doing well.

Neither of the two residents were home at the time of the blaze

Damage to the home is estimated at $100,000.

Norfolk County fire stations 11 (Vittoria), 1 (Simcoe), 2 (Port Dover), and 5 (Delhi) attended as the area is not serviced by fire hydrants and water was needed to be brought to the scene.

The investigation into the fire is concluded and deemed suspicious by Norfolk County OPP. The Office of The Fire Marshal is attending today.
